To someone outside the Christian faith, “Good Friday” can sound strange — even ironic.
It’s the day Jesus was beaten, mocked, and crucified. A day filled with pain and darkness.
So… what’s so “good” about it?

The answer is what makes Good Friday one of the most powerful and meaningful days in the Christian calendar — and an essential part of Easter.

Let’s talk about what really happened on Good Friday, and why Christians still gather to remember it.

What Happened on Good Friday?

Good Friday marks the day Jesus Christ was crucified.
According to the Gospels, after being betrayed, arrested, and unjustly tried, Jesus was handed over to be executed by the Roman government.

He was whipped, crowned with thorns, nailed to a wooden cross, and left to die a slow and brutal death.
All this — despite being innocent.

From a human perspective, it looked like failure.
But from God’s perspective, it was a rescue mission.

So Why Is It Called “Good”?

It’s called “Good Friday” because of what Jesus’ death accomplished.

His suffering wasn’t pointless. His death wasn’t just a tragedy.
It was a sacrifice — one made on behalf of all humanity.

“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus took the weight of sin and judgment on Himself. The cross was where mercy and justice met.
It wasn’t good because of what He went through — it was good because of what came out of it:
forgiveness, freedom, and a way back to God.

The Connection Between Good Friday and Easter

You can’t fully appreciate Easter Sunday without Good Friday.
Easter is the celebration — the resurrection, the triumph, the joy.
But Good Friday is the cost. It’s where the sacrifice was made. It’s the moment love paid the price.

Without the cross, the empty tomb is just a mystery.
But together, they tell the full story:

• Jesus died.

• Jesus rose.

• And because of both, we can live.
